This quiet township is an informal holiday town nestled amongst rivers and creeks.
A large agricultural service town, Wakool is the perfect destination for those interested in local industry, particularly rice and cereals.
The Wakool area is also a superb spot to head out fishing as the Edwards, Niemur and Wakool Rivers are all in close proximity. There are also a number of significant creeks that run via the town, making it a perfect destination for the fishermen.
The town is home to a services club, lcoal cafe and pub which is a renowned stopover for travellers through the area.
It is also well known for some of its annual community-run events. The Wakool Fishing Classic held on the last weekend in March has well and truly cemented itself in the Fishing Competition Calendar, and feedback suggests it is one of the best comps around. The event provides a great weekend of fishing, food and fun with a terrific prize pool.
Wakool is also home to the Wakool Sheep Races held on the last weekend in October. Known as 'The Melbourne Cup of the Bush' the event is run as a way of raising funds for the local community. As the name suggests the day is run around the prestigious Wakool Cup where attendees are in with a chance to win cash if their sheep runs first. A great day out that continues to grow in popularity each year.
