Rural Fire Service Information

Rural Fire Service Activities are now carried out under agreements between the Rural Fire Service and Council.  The Manager of the Mid Murray Zone, Mr Gary Eason is employed by the Rural Fire Service.  The zone now administered by Gary, consists of the Shires of Wakool, Murray, Deniliquin, Conargo (and Windouran) and Jerilderie.


To provide adequate levels of plant, equipment, facilities and administration support which is supported by appropriate plans and trained volunteers to ensure the efficient and effective support and response to fire emergencies and any other emergency situation.

The Bush Fire Danger period is declared between 1st October and 31st March, during which time a permit to burn must be obtained from your local brigade officer. Barbecues and camp fires must be surrounded by 1.5 metres and 3 metres respectively of cleared ground and incinerators 4.5 metres (permits to burn are effective between the hours of 7pm and 7am).

Permits will not be issued between 1st December to 1st February. During Total Fire Ban periods NO fires are to be lit.

Bushfire hazard reduction activities carried out by Council this year has involved reducing fire hazards on Council owned land by slashing and the construction of fire breaks. Areas included in this program include town and village streets, the edges of towns, Council owned blocks and Council rubbish tips.

These activities have been carried out in accordance with the local Fuel Management Plan as approved by the Wakool Bush Fire Management Committee.
